As a teacher, I am required to renew my teaching certificate every 5 years.
Only, I got my certification in June of 2007, so they went back to the beginning of the school year (2006), so it's really only 4 years. But they didn't tell me that. Oops!
Since I was in a private pre-school for 2 years of that 4 years, that left me with only 2 years to get my 120 in-service points needed for renewal (I thought I had 3). I didn't make much of an effort to go to workshops or take classes last year because I was just trying to get through my first year with my head above water. I figured I had 2full years to complete the work needed, and didn't see it as much of a problem.
Until, come October of 2010 and I find out my certificate expires in June of 2011.
So, long story short, the last few months have been filled with panicked attempts to sign up for as many workshops and classes as possible. One that I signed up for is a Differentiated Reading course worth 60 points. This is my lifesaver.
This is also a lot of work. I had my 3 hour orientation this evening. The rest of the class is all online. The objectives for the course take up a piece of paper, front and back, size 12 font. The schedule of assignments is about 6 pages long. It all looks very interesting, and I'm excited about what I am going to learn, in theory. I just wish I didn't have to fit 5 years worth of trainings into 9 months.
